Operation Privet

Operation Privet is an ambitious plan to tackle tree privet in the Thames area and enhance our indigenous biodiversity. We’ll start small so we can test the methods we use, then scale up once we’ve found the best path forward.
The operation plan is currently under development. Check back soon, we post it here for all to read and use.

In the meantime, we’re keen to hear from anyone with tree privet on their property so we can plan better. Please register your privet here.

Moanataiari Track

The Moanataiari Link Track is the first project in which TEA collaborated with The Thames Community Board, TCDC, and DOC to officially open a new DOC track linking to Waiotahi. A new lookout track was cleared leading to 180 degree views over Thames. A community working bee saw the entrance cleared, planted, and new signs and seats placed on the ridge. Continued planting and maintenance on the track will be undertaken to tackle the climbing asparagus.

John William Hall Arboretum

Working with TCDC, the Thames Community Board, and Predator Free Hauraki Coromandel, we asked the Arboretum Weeding Group what they needed. They asked for a blitz to give them a better starting place for ongoing maintenance. TEA and Predator Free Hauraki Coromandel connected to take out larger invasive species and scrub climbing asparagus. TCDC collected the weeds and will continue maintenance.

Karaka Track entrance

Great news! We’ve secured funding from TCDC to begin the restoration work at the trailhead for the Karaka Track.

You can read about it in our July newsletter, or join the working bee on 20th July!
